On April 7, 2019, students of M.T.O. Shahmaghsoudi® School of Islamic Sufism® participated in an interfaith retreat focused around Compassion and Judaism teachings. Titled “Interfaith Council of Contra Costa Monthly Retreat on Compassion,” the retreat was held at San Damiano Franciscan Retreat Center in Danville, California. It celebrated and focused the gathering of our interfaith communities through fostering dialogue on the teachings of Judaism. All attendees participated in collective group discussions centered on the topics on compassion, prayer, art, and community relations. Along with Judaism, the other faiths that were represented at this retreat were Sufism, Christianity, Buddhism, and Catholicism. In the spirit of planting the seeds for compassion, attendees gathered outside to plant flower seeds, weed, and tend to the main garden. Attendees then gathered together inside to learn and gain the Jewish perspective on compassion by Rabbi Dan Goldblatt. Rabbi Goldblatt spoke about growing the mind and deepening one’s spiritualism through compassion and understanding. After a spiritual song and blessing practice, we closed the retreat with a dinner dialoguing on shared gratitude.
