On Friday, April 5, 2019, the California Lutheran University’s Islamic Spirituality class visited the M.T.O. Shahmaghsoudi® School of Islamic Sufism® Los Angeles center. The students are learning about Sufism and reading sections of books from Al Ghazali and Ibn Arabi in their class. The visit to M.T.O. allowed them to experience an established Sufi school, built based on Islamic architectural principles and filled with Islamic arts inside, such as mirror mosaics, tile mosaics and calligraphy. They furthered experienced a full session at the school, that consisted of reading a section of the Holy Qur'an, Sufi chanting (Zikr), and a lecture on Sufism. They were also given a tour of the building and the grounds, and learned about the history of the school and its founders. The students had a chance to ask questions before and after, and provide comments on their experience. One student commented that the Zikr, and the associated left to right movement, felt like the hands of God holding a baby and rocking the child back and forth. It was a unique experience for the students and allowed them to experience how Sufis practice and worship.
