On June 16th, 2018, the volunteers of M.T.O. Shahmaghsoudi® School of Islamic Sufism® Vancouver Center hosted an event titled, The Art of Letting Go: A Mini-Workshop. This event was inspired by the principles of Ramadan, based on Hazrat Pir’s teachings, with the purpose of helping the guests in understanding its different experiential aspects. With ages ranging from 13-25, the 26 young adults attending the event had a chance to participate in four different workshop stations, which focused on: Awareness and Concentration, Habits, Discipline, and Attachments/Detachment. Within each of these groups, different activities took place, providing tools which participants could use in their daily lives. The awareness and concentration station taught guests to focus solely on one task at a time, while the habits station gave the participants a five-step framework to let go of unwanted habits. As the event progressed, the participants were given instructions on how to practice Zekr. Starting with the tapping of the knees, the swaying from left to right in an infinity motion, and finally adding the singing component - chanting “Hoo Hagh”. The event concluded with a presentation tying all aspects of the workshop and Ramadan together. Guests expressed their great enjoyment and interest for this eye-opening and informative event!
