  • M.T.O. Shahmaghsoudi® Sacramento Center

On March 17, 2018, the M.T.O. Shahmaghsoudi® Sacramento center hosted an afternoon event celebrating Norouz, the first day of Spring. Guests enjoyed learning about the history of Norouz, Celebrations of Spring, and the Persian Calendar as well as the symbolic importance of Spring and its renewal of life in both physical and spiritual realms. The display, called Sofreh Haftseen, always includes at least seven items beginning with the letter “s” in the Persian language. Each item included in the display has a symbolic and spiritual meaning. The items usually include sekkeh (coins), serkeh (vinegar), sumagh (a spice), seer (garlic), seeb (apples), sunbol (hyacinth), sabzeh (living greens), samanoo (a sweet pudding cooked from freshly sprouted wheat plant) and senjed (a small fruit with tan skin and white interior, known in the West as silverberry or Persian olive). In addition, a Holy Qur’an, eggs, a mirror, and swimming fish are included in the display. The meanings of the various items were explained, and visitors enjoyed learning about historical background, a short poetry reading, a Sufi teaching story, and the melodious chanting of the Sufi Zikr. The program ended with an authentic Persian meal traditionally served on Norouz.
