On March 19, 2022, M.T.O. Shahmaghsoudi® Vancouver Centre hosted “Sustainable Rejuvenation: A Norouz Celebration”, an outdoor event celebrating Global Recycling Day and the Spring Equinox, to showcase art created by their MTO Sustainability Volunteers. As part of a global project, volunteers created art pieces from recyclable materials to raise awareness about waste creation and the environmental crisis. Over 10 weeks, Volunteers spent more than 300 hours researching, designing, collecting and assembling metal cans, metal wires, and recycled wood, to create 4 decorative trees, 2 decorative columns, a haft-seen spread, and 2 fully functional instruments (Kamāncheh, a traditional persian instrument, and Cajon, a latin-american percussion instrument) which they used for musical performances. In addition to sharing words about the School, MTO Sustainability, and Norouz, volunteers gifted each attendee a painted pin made from the cans, in hopes of inspiring them to repurpose everyday wastes into beautiful and possibly functional pieces. Attendees included community members, friends, and local government officials, namely the Burnaby Mayor, Mike Hurley, Hon. Raj Chouhan, a Member and Speaker of the Legislature, MLA Janet Routledge, local Member of Legislature, as well as 3 Burnaby Council Members, Pietro Calendino, Sav Dhaliwal, and James Wang.
